also I guess if I'm already pissed off about closed captioning, I'll just come out and say that computer transcription is ruining the transcription industry just like AI is currently threatening writers.
people who rely on CC will tell you loudly and often about how fucking terrible automated captions are, even the "better" ones, and now that production companies have a cheap-to-free option, they're not hiring the transcribers who are actually good at their jobs.
so people who rely on CC have to put up with crappier and crappier captions so Amazon can save a few dollars, already-underpaid transcribers lose their jobs, fewer people start going into the industry to start with, there are fewer people to hire, and the cycle just continues.
so yes!!! I'm mad!!! about the GO captions!!!

Captions are not a choice. I cannot hear, understand, or effectively comprehend something without captions. There is no excuse for not captioning something. It is, quite frankly, the bare minimum.
There is no other disability or ailment that excuses not putting captions on things.

HUGE shout-out to the Monkey Wrench series on YouTube for their closed captioning. Like holy shit. It's rare to find a video where they actually captioned everything correctly instead of those crap auto-generated jumbles. Also, the only series I've seen where they did "funny" closed captioning but it didn't very obviously detract from the plot and tone of the scene (Helluva Boss I'm looking at you), it was just a small change in how the word is written out to make sure the joke of the voice delivery gets across. No joke the best subtitles I've seen on an indie project ever.
Watch it with CC on I'm begging you, it's worth it. I mean, watch Monkey Wrench in general, but like. Cmon. The captioning.

Just watched ep 1 of Dead Boy Detectives and why are the subtitles (English CC) so bad? They left out SO MANY WORDS.
Anyway, if this kind of shit annoys you too, here's how to report incorrect subtitles to Netflix so maybe they'll stop slacking on accessibility: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/104515?q=report%20incorrect%20subtitles

thoughts on captioning as a HoH person:
youtube - hit or miss. a lot of videos don't have their own captions or transcript. usually auto caption gets 90% of words right but thats still more wrong words than you might think, and some videos are not able to be captioned due to age. also some people think it's funny to do joke captions for some fucking dumbass reason
tiktok - look i have mixed feelings on tiktok but at least the up-and-coming generations encouraged people to make the platform relatively accessible. kinda ruined it when they introduced auto caption though because I've noticed a lot of people rely on the automation instead of their own script?? so stuff falls through the cracks and it feels like meaning and sometimes context gets lost
cable television - usually does pretty ok if it's a scheduled program, but live events specifically suck ass and will be a full 2-3 minutes behind in my experience
The Merchant of Venice (2004) on specifically the plain DVD version - ASS FUCKING ASS THEY ONLY HAD FRENCH IM STILL FUCKING MAD ABOUT IT I HAD TO TRY TO READ FRENCH THE ENTIRE MOVIE NIGHT AT AGE 16 AND I COULD ONLY PIECE IT TOGETHER VAGUELY. i literally never fucking finished that movie because i got so mad
pretty much every other movie on DVD - 9.9/10 times they would be spot fucking on i remember being so excited when on some movies there were TWO kinds of captions where one was more descriptive depending on your needs..... effervescent ....
netflix - these guys have been on my bad side ever since they literally did not have captions until someone sued them over it. like what the fuck why do u not care abt d/Deaf people

I saw your addition to the post about the subtitle inaccuracies on streaming services being illegal and reportable, does that also apply to dubbed media having discrepancies because the subtitles for the original language are reused for the dubbed version? Its a problem with pretty much any anime ive watched on almost every streaming service.
I have auditory processing issues related to my autism, so i often need subtitles but when the subtitles are translated differently compared to the dubbed translation it literally makes the show unwatchable for me
so i am going to preface this by saying that i am by no means an expert, but yes, i believe they do!
according to the ADA, subtitles for dialogue in English have to exactly match the audio, and anything that does not follow that is out of compliance. in any case, i would strongly suggest you report the streaming service for noncompliance.
there are no legal ramifications or repercussions for you if the FCC chooses not to take action, and if they do, you will be helping yourself and millions of other folks (i also have APD and rely on captions).
thanks for reaching out!

Okay so obvs lots of us love the captions for Mentopolis - including me, don't get me wrong - but I mainly use them for focus/processing rather than anything hearing-related, and my brain won't stop thinking about whether or not they're too "fun" and it takes away from accuracy. Like, for me, I read them and I see the nuance and they make sense when I compare them to what I'm hearing. But what if that's not other people's experience? What if the general preference of those who rely primarily or exclusively on CC is that it needs to be more clinically accurate or something less... nuanced? idk.
And I can't find any info about who does D20's captions so I don't know how inclusive or trained their staff is, so now I'm just confused and don't know what to think.
Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Closed Captioning: How It Works and Its Importance
Tumblr media
Closed captioning is a process of displaying text on-screen that corresponds to the audio in a video. It enables deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals to understand the content, but also benefits those who prefer to watch videos without sound or are in noisy environments. It is also essential for compliance with accessibility laws and can improve search engine rankings. Overall, closed captioning enhances the viewing experience and makes content more accessible to a wider audience.

Really wish professional YouTubers caption their views more often. I understand captioning is very expensive, but at this point you really should be asking your sponsors to foot the bill for accessibility.
And it's not unprecedent. TV used to be like that. Bumpers like this will forever be etched into my memories:
youtube
Video description:
Old late '90s, early 2000s YTV bumper. A monster or alien-like being is sitting by a TV. Text on screen is narrated by an announcer: "Closed captioning brought to you by …" The alien thumps the top of the TV, causing the signal to change to a Coca Cola logo. Narrator continues "Cola Cola." Zooms into the logo.
If every YouTube video is gong to be sponsored, might as well put accessibility on the negotiation table before signing the contract.

I don't understand something on TV, so I run it back, put on the closed captioning, play it and the closed captioning says (chanting), like do your job!

it’s all pirate this pirate that until you want some damn subtitles
I know it’s work but if those websites could be accessible and invest in closed captioning (NOT AI GENERATED IT IS ALWAYS SHIT) that’d be 🤌

Is anyone else getting this really weird captions error on YouTube where ALL of the captions just show up at the very beginning of the video, instead of playing out normally?
